What is Lost-Wax Casting?
Lost-wax casting is a process of turning a hand-carved wax model into a solid metal piece, like gold or silver. It's called "lost wax" because the wax model is melted and "lost" during casting — replaced by molten metal.
Lost-wax casting (also called cire perdue) is an ancient metalworking technique used to create detailed, one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces. It's been used for thousands of years — from ancient Egypt to modern fine jewelry — and it's especially popular among artisan goldsmiths and handmade jewelry brands.
The Lost-Wax Casting Process: Step by Step
Creating handmade jewelry using lost-wax casting involves several meticulous steps:
- Wax Carving - The artist hand-sculpts the design in jewelry wax, carving every detail including textures, patterns, and organic shapes. This is where the creative vision comes to life.
- Sprue Attachment - A wax rod (called a sprue) is attached to the wax model to create a channel for the molten metal to flow through.
- Investment - The wax model is placed in a metal flask and surrounded with investment plaster, a heat-resistant material that captures every detail of the wax carving.
- Burnout - The flask is placed in a kiln at high temperatures (1000-1350°F), causing the wax to melt and burn away, leaving a perfect hollow cavity in the investment.
- Casting - Molten metal (sterling silver, gold, or other precious metals) is poured or forced into the cavity using centrifugal force or vacuum pressure.
- Cooling & Cleanup - After the metal solidifies, the investment is broken away, revealing the raw metal casting.
- Finishing - The piece is cleaned, polished, and refined to bring out its final beauty.
